Singh Kalra – better known as Gulzar – was director Bimal Roy's assistant on Bandini, which released in 1963 and
marked his debut as a lyricist.
Ironically, he was initially reluctant to accept the offer to do what would eventually become his calling, but it was the one and only S D Burman, who composed the track, who persuaded him to pen Mora Gora Ang Lai Le.
Although he did not pen the other tracks in the film, it wouldn’t be incorrect to state that he made an outstanding debut.
It was rendered by Lata Mangeshkar.
