Hasrat Jaipuri
penned Teri Zulfon Se Judai, from Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai.
That line means, “I didn’t seek separation from your hair”.
Another line of the song, crooned by Mohammed Rafi, went, “Khudai to nahin maangi thi” (which, in this context, means, “I did not ask for godliness.”)
While that is an Urdu word, Khudai has an altogether different connotation in Hindi – digging. So, the aforementioned line could also be translated to, “I did not ask for digging”.
Though that made no sense, the listeners did dig (i.e., appreciate) the Shankar Jaikishan composition.
