Bhatiyali
is a form of Bengali folk music.
A river
song, it is sung by boatmen in West Bengal and Bangladesh.
It was
used – with a variation, of course – by S D Burman in his Bandini song, O Re Maajhi
Mere Saajan Hain Us Paar (which means, “Hey dear boatman, my lover is on
the other bank of the river.”)
His
involvement in the song wasn’t restricted to composing it, but he rendered it
as well.
It would
not be incorrect to state that hiS(ach)inimitable voice was apt for the bardic
rendition.
Shailendra
penned it.
